Professional Gemologist Program

    There are two exams to become certified as a Professional Gemologist; a written or theoretical exam, and a practical exam. The theoretical exam will be sent to you by email. For the practical exam, a package of 15 gems will be sent to you through the mail.
     There is a $30 grading fee for each exam. In addition, a $200 deposit is required for the gems used in the Practical Exam. This will be refunded, provided all the gems are returned. You will be charged for any gems lost or damaged.

Master Gemologist Program

    Any member who is an IGS certified Professional Gemologist, a Graduate Gemologist, or holds a similar certification from another recognized gemological organization may apply.

Gem Lending Program

    The IGS offers packages of 15 gems for students to practice their identification and grading skills. The stones and grading are identical to the practical exam. Even though these are intended as practice, should you score 87% or greater, it will count towards your Professional Gemologist certification.
     There is a $30 grading fee for each set of stones. In addition, a $200 deposit is required. This will be refunded, provided all the gems are returned. You will be charged for any gems lost.
