Hi Adam, the Optic Axis of a gemstone is directly down the Crystal from top to bottom.
If you have a crystal that is broken or waterworn and place it on the polarscope to identify it is doubly refractive (anistropic) then you need to rotate the stone to all angles until it does not blink 4 times in a 360 degree rotation if it stays static and does not blink then you have orientated the gem directly down the Optic Axis
