buying Tsavorite

    how can i make sure once buying rough tsavorite … that i not buy chrome tourmaline ? the test with chelsea filter may not work thist ime, as both stones has chrome in it. the refractive index is similar. any advice on this ?

    Hi, if you carry a small Polariscope and torch or use the sun you would be able to distinguish very quickly that the Tsavorite was singly refractive and if it were Chrome tourmaline then it would show double refraction through the Polariscope.

    in saying this Tsavorite is a totally different colour to Chrome Tourmaline, but I would not suggest that anyone buying gemstone just go on colour.
