For the last several years, there has been a great deal of anxiety surrounding the role of AI in the workplace. Many are concerned that AI-assisted technology will render jobs currently performed by humans obsolete.
Similarly, craftspeople worry that increasingly specialized machines are replacing skilled artisans. Fears within creative communities are especially potent. A hallmark of humanity is our imagination and the way we share creative visions with one another.
With AI now being used to design fashion, produce photos and videos, write articles (but not this one!), and more, as machines are taking the place of trained human artists, people are worried about more than just losing jobs – they fear that humanity’s core artistic voice is at risk of being muted.
The 2026 gems and jewelry shows in Las Vegas were the perfect place to ask some of the industry’s most successful artists about how AI and mechanized manufacturing fit into their creative vision and business models. Interestingly, the answers we received were varied.
On the creative side, some craftspeople said that they express their art wholly organically and will never involve technology in their unique visions.
